My First Bike

Everyone that rides seems to have a story to tell on their first bike. This is mine.

When I was about fourteen' I can remember going by this house with a tarp over something. It wasn’t till I was just over sixteen that I thought may be it’s a bike under that tarp setting out in the weather year after year in Toronto. So one day with a friend we knocked on the door and asked if that was a bike and if he was interested in selling it? He thought for a minute than said “well I haven’t used it for a few years, lets see if it will start.” When the tarp came off, it revealed a 1942 Norton 500 single in army drab. This is like the bike I had. this picture comes from Treve Deeley's bike musum in Vancouver the best musum I ever seen.  Now believe it or not it started on the first kick. So for a $100 bucks I drove it home. Next there came a  can of blue paint and a brush. Like all bikes it had a few quirks about it. Like; top speed was only 80 KPMs but it had so much torque that once I had to replace all the bolts that held on the chain sprocket. An other was that on a hot day while you were boogging down the road the bike would stop taking gas, you grab the clutch the motor would stop because it was seized. So I would pull over park it for a while go get a cold drink, have a leisurely break, then go back, kick ( no electric start) the bike once and be on my way again. This happened at least 6 times. It was a good bike and infected me with the have to have a bike in my life disease. Since then I  had 2 more british,

 Then 2 bmw

and now the best ride.
